Installing WordPress in Four Simple Steps
|
Now let’s be honest, installing WordPress for the first time can be a daunting and difficult task, especially if you lack experience in using software of this caliber. That doesn’t mean that we can’t make it easier for you, by giving you a few tips.
First of all, we should make clear what WordPress actually does for you. WordPress is arguably the most popular website building software in the world. It is used by professionals and amateurs alike and it is widely known for how easy it makes the task of creating websites. This of course is comparative to how hard it is to create a site without WordPress, so you should not feel bad if it still seems hard to you.
Before we go into the installation progress, note that some web hosting companies will install WordPress for you. So, if you find this guide too complicated, you could look for this kind of web host to help you.
The four steps to install WordPress manually are:
- Downloading the Installation Package
- Getting the Files onto your Server
- Create a MySQL Database
- Install WordPress
So, let’s get started:
Downloading the Installation Package
This is a pretty simple task. Just go to https://wordpress.org/ and download the latest version of the installation package. Avoid downloading the package from any other site, other than the official WordPress pages.
Once you click on the download button, you will soon have the package on your hard disk. It is now time to extract those files into a new folder, so you can keep things tidy and simple.
This leads us to:
Getting the Files onto your Server
You need your WordPress software to create a site, so it should be on the server where your website will be created on. This means that you have to make sure that the server has the basic requirements to run WordPress. This is usually the case, because all self-respecting web hosting companies know that their clients will use this program on their server.
To move the files safely to the server, you need an FTP program. With FTP you will be able to move the WordPress Files to the public_html folder. If you only want part of your server to work on WordPress you can move the files to a subfolder of your own creation.
With that done, you now have to:
Create a MySQL Database
To install WordPress later on you will need the information you’ll create while creating your own MySQL database. This is a system that will keep your information and lets your server use the data as efficiently and quickly as possible.
Registering your info isn’t that hard (and there are countless guides on using MySQL if you get stuck!). Just remember to write down your information on a piece of paper!
With all the above done, now and you can move on to the most important bit:
Install WordPress
Now comes the tricky part. Installing WordPress on your server has to be done carefully and with a clear mind, so choose a stress-free time in your day to do so. Here’s what you need to do:
- Go to http://yourdomain.com
- Press the Create a Configuration File button on the message you’ll see there (if you don’t, you probably need to access it via your host’s admin panel)
- Press Go on the next page that appears and have your MySQL info at hand
- Input your information on the next page that appears and hit “Submit”(Double-check what you’ve written first)
- If you wrote down the correct information, you will now be able to click on the Install button
- Now you’ll see a page on which you have to write your username, your website name and an email. Insert a correct email, just in case you forget your password.
Congratulations! You have now installed WordPress and should be proud of this achievement. The world of Website creation is now open to you.
